Seriously. I had no idea so many people were looking for boudoir photographers. While working to help one of our featured professional members, I tweaked a few additional areas of our site to reflect this type of work and have really been surprised at the number of hits for people searching for a boudoir photographer.

If this is a type of photography that you do, please be sure to list that in the description of your artist profile or if you have more than one profile, maybe even set up a separate one just for that. Some potential clients are quick scanners and generally will look toward the top of the page (good reason to be a featured member) and will look at titles and descriptions first. Words that I am seeing come up more often that people are using when looking for this type of photographer are: boudoir and intimate. If you are already a featured member for your other work, since this is so different and would generally attract someone looking for something very specific, it would even be a good idea to set up two different accounts and have a separate one with another featured membership for marketing your boudoir photography to potential clients. A client looking for a photographer who does children will generally assume most photographers do, but one looking for boudoir work will probably not assume it is something most photographers do, which is why this one would need to be very tailored to the boudoir market.

I hope this 411 helps photographers who do boudoir photography and are looking for ways to market to that clientele. There seems to be a pretty big market for it and just wanted to pass that along.

If any of our members would like to share some experience in an article on boudoir photography for us, we would love to do a feature on you!

Ruthi is a portrait photographer serving Northern VA and the DC metro area. She is married with three children, who serve as her mostly willing (if bribed) guinea pigs for her always-evolving concept shot ideas. Ruthi’s specialty is natural light portraiture and sunset silhouettes. Over the past year, she has enjoyed shooting political events in the DC area, and has especially enjoyed serving as a volunteer photographer for a presidential campaign. In the coming year, she plans to add a division of women’s “fine art glamour portraiture” to her repertoire, and will also be involved as a member of the photographer’s guild at the Lorton Arts Foundation in Northern Virginia. (image taken by Samara Hutcheson)

How long have you been in business? 2.5 years

Do you have a favorite type of photography? Portraiture/character studies

Share your favorite tip for relaxing subjects and getting great shots during a shoot? With kids I sing theme songs. I ask them their favorite show or movie, and then break into its song. Since I live in a house with a tv and small kids, I guarantee I know them all.

What is your absolute favorite photoshop action in the whole world? I have too many to count. My various black and white actions are probably the most important. I also like Mama Shan’s Powder (http://www.photoshopmama.net/) for smoothing out blotchy skin.

Favorite clothing store? Please tell us why so we will know why we should shop there, too! Anthropologie or Ralph Lauren. I could never choose. Anthropologie has sort of a polished Bohemian flair to a lot of their stuff, but nothing beats Ralph Lauren for beautifully classic style.

Share three things most people do not know about you:
As a kid, I was a state freestyle and butterfly swimmer.
I have ridden on a dolphin’s back.
I ride hunter/jumper horses. Or I did, when I used to have free time.

What is your favorite thing about being a photographer? Working from home, setting my own schedule, and getting the first peek of the card after a great session. I love that feeling where you see a special image for the first time and your heart skips a beat.

What is the most embarrassing thing that ever happened to you at a session?
I fell through a boardwalk. Really. There was a broken board, I was walking backward and didn’t see it, and I fell straight through up to my thighs.

What is your favorite lens? My 85 1.4 without a doubt.

Who is YOUR favorite photographer? Such a cliche, but really, Annie L.

Favorite non photography related item? A computer with internet access. Wait, is that photography-related??

Is Elvis really dead? Define dead?!

Decaf or regular? REGULAR

If you had a million dollars how would you spend it? I would pay off EVERYTHING and be completely debt-free, travel a bit, and do more volunteer/charity work.

Favorite book? To Kill a Mockingbird

Show us your most FAVORITE image ever! Oh this is so hard. Favorite EVER? Assuming you mean my favorite image that I took myself, overall probably this one:

James Pauls has a 10 year old graphic design/photography business that has morphed into a stock/commercial photography business over the past several years. This is due to the fact that he has a serious case of A.D.D. and gets too easily bored with graphic design – LOL. His design background has been a serious help in developing a productive business which in many ways is a service to designers and the business world. Photography allows James to exercise his creativity and his particular field allows for great variety. He loves working with people and loves capturing life through the lens as he engages in the journey.

James has been married for 21 years to Peggy Jo, and refers to her as an amazing person, mother and an excellent Realtor for Keller Williams Realty. She is also a great help when he does one of his spontaneous shoots and need a reliable assistant or anytime he asks, for that matter.

James and his wife have twin children (boy and girl) who graduated from High School last year and are enrolled in a great pre-college program locally. They are both awesome, artistic and very talented.

His photography equipment of choice is a Canon 5D, favorite lens a Canon 25-105mm or 50mm 1:4 prime lens all carried in a LowePro Vertex 200 AW (with a 20D for backup). Either natural light or strobes (indoor and outdoor) work for him and he loves to experiment and stretch the limits and challenge himself. He is grateful to have 3 great photography assistants who make the experience even better.

Debi’s beautiful image was chosen to be our first feature image! As someone who had one of those hard working fathers with just a bit of dirt on their hands and a few scars here and there, I loved the way she so beautifully wrote that the father’s hands were like this because of the work he does to support his family. I LOVED that!

Debi works out of Spring, Texas just north of Houston and specializes in black and white portraits for newborn and young children.

Tell us about your image and why it is your favorite, Debi:

“I love this image because of the contrast of the new, delicate, fresh and unmarred skin of a newborn against her father’s hands stained, worn and scarred by the work he does to support his family. His hands are just as beautiful as her little feet. What I love best is that learning to see with a photographer’s eye is what has given me this appreciation when other’s might say they wish he had scrubbed his hands better before picture day.”
